MUSIC IN SCHOOLS

The Music Collection's ethos is twofold. Apart from our 'normal' concertising, we have been Musicians-in-Residence in various museums and galleries, performing in places where music and art can work collectively. Because of the obvious 'educational' aspect of this programme, it has led us directly to the second tier of our being, namely the Music in Schools project. With this project, we aim to give something to the community, establish new audiences and encourage young people to take their talent, or simply their interests, further.

Classical music was the ‘pop’ music of the 18th century.

The Music in Schools project is straightforward. The Music Collection takes their historic instruments into the schools (or sometimes uses what is available at the school, whichever is the most appropriate), introducing the students to the instruments and the music that Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn owned and composed.

The concert-workshops are based around the requirements and abilities of the individual school, creating an appropriate programme with heads of music departments. Some schools are interested in performance, others prefer a workshop to enhance the National Curriculum for the GCSE and A-level students, giving them a different perspective towards understanding their studies.

The programmes that we provide are not only enjoyable but musically informative and can be historically related to art, literature and the social history of the period.

We work under the premise that people like to learn, that they enjoy being educated, especially if it can be done in a way in which they can participate and enjoy. Our aim is to make classical music accessible to everyone by encouraging young people to participate and therefore understand and appreciate.

By targeting secondary comprehensive schools with a keen interest in music, but not always having access to events such as these, Music in Schools  is giving something to the community. County Council Authorities are anxious that this sort of thing should be available to as many of their schools as possible, 'though you will not be greatly surprised to hear that the financial contribution they are able to make is negligible.

We often give to less advantaged areas with the aim to promote good music to young people at their most impressionable age.

As you can see from the enclosure, this project has received appreciation and interest from students and teachers as well as business sponsors and local education authorities. There has been an encouraging response to the work done in the regional areas. We intend to build the series up, developing it into a cycle, allowing us to return to the chosen schools so that it also becomes a developing series within the individual schools.

In order to succeed, The Music in Schools project must be totally sponsored, either business sponsorship, trusts or Arts   Council funded.

There is no charge made to the school for any of the work involved.

There is no admission charge to the concerts. In order to make this programme accessible, it has to be accessible in every way, and therefore sponsored. The more schools attended by The Music Collection each year the greater the benefit to everyone who participates in the Music in Schools programme.
